One way to enter Cathedral Island is through the Cathedral Lock, which forms part of the 19th-century Poznań Stronghold. The Stronghold was constructed by the Prussian authorities, who at the time ruled over Poznań and the rest of the Wielkopolska Region. King Friedrich Wilhelm III set out to strengthen his country’s defences. To that end, he ordered the construction of numerous fortifications in his lands. The Poznań stronghold was one of Europe’s largest and most advanced facilities of its kind. The Lock was made up of two bridgeheads and a bridge with valves that regulated the flow of the river. In the event of a siege, the water could be directed via a special channel to the stronghold’s foreground to hold off the enemy.
Audiobooks are available for rental at the Cathedral Lock (Porta Posnania, entrance on Dziekańska Street). You can rent them daily during the summer season and on weekends during the winter season. They will guide you around the most fascinating parts of Cathedral Island, including the Cathedral and its cellars. A special route has been prepared for families with children. More information.
