A community which makes improving its immediate surroundings the main priority faces major challenges. Nevertheless, the city’s residents strove to accomplish this goal in various areas of life. One of the main tasks facing the city in this regard was charitable activity. Caring for the weak, the decrepit and the lonely was considered a sign of an advanced civilization and of progress. It was in this spirit that the so-called Latz Home was founded. As the story has it, Benjamin Salomon Latz was a religious Jew and a merchant who, in his final days, asked the famous Rabbi of Poznań Akiva Eger for advice on what to do to make proper use of the fortune that he had worked to amass throughout his life. Eger suggested that he establish a place that cares for the ill and the needy.
