The monumental Bazar building served as a unique symbol of Polish identity in the heart of Prussian Poznań. In operation since 1842, this institution was a hub of Polish economic, cultural and political life during the Partitions. It was the launching pad for a number of modern initiatives embodying the “organic work” ideal, a new method for defying the anti-Polish policies of the Prussian state by means of peaceful resistance and fostering the social and economic growth of the Polish population. The movement was spearheaded by burghers and the intelligentsia with the financial support of the local landed gentry and the clergy.
