The central structure in the Poznań Forum was a castle erected for Emperor Wilhelm II. Its construction was meant to elevate Poznań’s status to that of a residence of Prussian royalty (and, by the same token, German emperors). The edifice was rendered in the neo-romanesque style, intended to highlight the monarch’s power and magnificence. Its dominant feature was a high tower which once housed a chapel. Its highly-ornamental style, reminiscent of the Byzantine Empire, stood in direct contrast to that of the mausoleum to Poland’s first rulers in the Golden Chapel on Cathedral Island.
