A stronghold gate on the Berlin side of the city was erected in the mid-19th century. From the very start, the Gate seriously hampered urban transportation. To make things worse, rapid growth was seen in the volume of traffic headed towards the railway station and Poznań’s western suburbs. The city authorities fought for years to have the fortifications that frustrated life in Poznań demolished. They succeeded in the early 20th century. Once cleared by the military, new space became available for the city’s expansion.
